Entertainment

Representing clients throughout the entertainment industry, Waller Lansden provides counsel to individuals and companies involved with music, film and television across the country.

In the music industry, we represent songwriters, publishing companies, artists, record companies, managers, products and executives.  We represent musical artists in recording contract negotiations and songwriters in publishing agreements.  Our attorneys have experience in copyright matters related to songwriting and music publishing.  We have negotiated numerous agreements for the sale and purchase of song catalogs as well as entire publishing and distribution companies.  We also assist songwriters and their heirs in the recapture of copyright ownership under the termination rights established in federal copyright law, regaining ownership and control of numerous hit songs and well-known musical compositions.

Representative matters related to film and television include negotiating development deals and production agreements for projects including major motion pictures and documentaries, television shows, made-for-TV movies, advertising, and music videos.  We also conduct fair use reviews for issues related to copyright in documentaries and negotiate life story acquisition deals for biographical television programs.

A significant component of Waller Lansden’s Entertainment practice involves intellectual property litigation.  Our attorneys have experience before federal and state courts.  Representative matters include copyright and trademark infringement related to sound recordings, musical compositions and album artwork, accounting for royalties, breach of entertainment agreements and appeals for college and professional athletes.
