Waller achieves Mansfield Rule 5.0 certification

Last year, Waller announced that the firm had chosen to participate in the “Mansfield Rule 5.0” certification process, which launched nationwide July 15, 2021, with the measurement period ending on July 14, 2022. The goal of the Mansfield Rule is to boost the representation in law firm leadership of persons from historically underrepresented groups.

Waller is pleased to announce that the firm met the requirements to be Mansfield Rule 5.0 certified. This certification is an exciting step in the right direction and supports the firm’s efforts to make positive changes.

“Our participation in the Mansfield Rule certification aligns with our strategy to foster a culture and business acumen of mutual respect, and to attract, retain, and promote outstanding lawyers and professionals from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and abilities,” said Ron Snitker, Waller’s Chief Diversity Officer. “As a result of our commitment to this certification we made notable changes in defining and considering candidates for leadership roles and doubled our percentage of diverse practice group leaders at the firm.”

Early outcomes based on 2017-2019 data show Mansfield is working at its intended purpose to diversify leadership. While these outcomes are promising, there is more to be done to truly change long-standing, embedded cultures in law firms.

Mansfield Rule 6.0

Along with 99% of the large participating law firms and 20 new firms, Waller has recommitted with Mansfield Rule 6.0 which runs from July 2022 to July 2023. The 6.0 version requires firms to:

  • Consider at least 30% historically underrepresented lawyers –women lawyers, racial and ethnic lawyers, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities –when appointing, electing, or promoting into leadership roles and the equity partnership, among other activities that focus on the path to leadership.
  • Consider 30% underrepresented talent for all C-suite roles.
  • Share best practices and lessons learned with each other through knowledge sharing forums and their contributions are required for certification.
  • Define and publish job descriptions for all leadership roles.
  • Meet numerous check-in, data-collection, and reporting milestones throughout the certification year.
